September 1, 2012 – Cayuga, ON – Incoming NDRA Alcohol Funny Car Series points leader Larry Dobbs took the top qualifying spot today at the Canadian Funny Car Championships at Cayuga Dragway, in the process moving even closer to becoming the inaugural NDRA Alcohol Funny Car Series presented by Ohsweken Speedway champion.
“Looking forward to tomorrow,” said an enthusiastic Dobbs. “It’s gonna be a really nice day, the air will be decent and the track is excellent. I feel great about tomorrow.” Dobbs didn’t go without his issues on the day though, experiencing some parts attrition during the burnout on his final qualifying attempt when the blower belt snapped. “I’m just so happy that belt broke tonight and not tomorrow, you know that’d be a real heartbreaker.”
Number two qualifier Dylan Hache made a tough decision to sit out the final qualifying session, despite needing the oh-so-important bonus points to have any shot at catching Dobbs in the standings, in order to make a gear ratio change in his transmission. “We came here to win this race. I think that’s (gear change in the transmission) is gonna help us on the E.T., we’ve got the horsepower, we’ve just gotta get the ratio right and get that E.T,” said Hache. “I think we’ve got a good chance tomorrow. I think we’ve got a fast car, we’ve just gotta do a little tinkerin around.”
Brian White from Cicero, New York made a single pass in the final qualifying session, after Dobbs broke, which showed good promise for the runner-up during the last event held at Cayuga in June. “Feelin a lot better that we at least made a run down the track and I think we’ve solved our issues. We’ll give ‘em a race tomorrow,” said White. “We did well here before and hopefully we can do it again.”
When asked about his chances at winning the championship, second place Vince Rastelli said, “Well, we’ve gotta try and go as fast as Larry’s been going and I think we’ve gotta go a couple rounds further than Larry tomorrow.” Rastelli and crew sheered a clutch stud during the second qualifying session, which kept them out of the third session, negating any bonus points they may have gained. The only saving grace for them is that Dobbs was unable to stage his car in the final session, keeping the points chase tight.
Eliminations for the NDRA Alcohol Funny Car Series presented by Ohsweken Speedway get underway Sunday September 2nd at 1:00 PM.
